CMAP Brings Home Awards
Friday, October 28, 2005 By Suzanne St. John-Crane from "The Gilroy Dispatch" Each year, the Western Region of the Alliance for Community Media holds a video contest called the WAVE Awards. The contest solicits entries from access centers in six western states: California, Utah, Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada and New Mexico. Producers can enter a variety of categories, including talk show, music video, documentary profile, government programming, programs by and for youth, etc. There are more than 20 categories, and producers at both amateur and professional levels can participate. CMAP [a community TV station in Gilroy California] has been entering the WAVE Awards for the past few years. Each year, our producers do better and better. We started out receiving a finalist certificate or two. Last year, two of our producers scored highest in the "live to tape and programming that makes a difference" categories. We were thrilled. This year, CMAP really topped itself. Four of our members won WAVE Awards for their outstanding work in video production. This first name will be familiar to you. Former CMAP Operations Manager Kelly Abbot [who] won a WAVE in the "live/live to tape" category [also took the award for a talk show she produced here at the CMAP studios called "World of Fair Trade." Other top ranking winners include Val Jeffery for "The Better Part," and Shannon Grissom for "Give Your Walls Some Soul."] CMAP producers also placed second or third in six other productions. What a feat! Craig Goldstein, CMAP's media production specialist, scored in the "programs by/for youth" category with his "Student Video Showcase Vol. 1," as well as in the "channel/show promo" category with the "Teen Talk TV" promo. "Life Changing Word" producer and host Weyman Thomas placed high once again in the religious category, as did Dee Guerrero and Shawn Mulcare for the instructional show "How to with Cast and Crew." Finally, a congrats to Kerry Moynahan for capturing [a finalist award for her show about film festivals] called "ReviewFest." It takes a tremendous amount of time and effort to put together a show, let alone an award-winning masterpiece. Many thanks and congrats to the CMAP producers who placed. It's YOUR work that keeps our channels looking beautiful! |
